The best sugar cookies you have ever made!

These cookies are a must for us during the holidays. They are easy to roll out, bake up perfectly and are fun to decorate. We gift these every year and get tons of compliments. The secret for these amazing cookies…lard from our pastured pigs.

Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cups rendered lard, room temperature

  • 3/4 cups butter, room temperature

  • 2 cups white sugar

  • 4 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a mixer, cream together lard, butter and sugar until light in color and creamy. Add in eggs and vanilla and beat until just combined.

  • Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into a separate bowl. Then add slowly to the mixer and stir until combined.

  • Divide dough in half and wrap in plastic wrap or parchment and chill dough for at least an hour or overnight

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly flour work surface and rolling pin. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutter or knife. Place cookies 1 inch apart on parchment lined cookie sheets.

  • Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until just starting to get golden on bottom. Cool on a wrack completely before decorating. Makes approximately 5 dozen 3” cookies.

Decorating Suggestions

  • Powdered sugar and water for a sweet glaze

  • Piped royal icing for a professional look (Kathryn’s choice)

  • Sprinkling of sugar before baking
